About Ms. Meier
Waunakee Middle School - EAGLES Team
The 2019-20 school year will be my second year teaching in Waunakee, but my 14th year in the district. Believe it or not, I was also once a seventh grader right here in Waunakee Middle School, and I went to school here in the district from kindergarten through my senior year!
I graduated from Waunakee High School in 2007 and attended college at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where I received a degree in Secondary Education (with social studies as my focus). I then went on to start my teaching career in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, where I worked as a field science educator for several years at an incredible place called the Teton Science Schools (TSS) - my classroom was Grand Teton National Park, and every week our visiting students hiked, paddled, and skied around the beautiful mountain landscape.
Eventually, I started working in the office at TSS, and found myself in a career in nonprofit administration. Since then, I've worked in various roles at conservation and education-related nonprofits before deciding I missed teaching too much. Mostly, I missed building relationships with students over the course of an entire school year. When a job opportunity came up at Waunakee Middle School, I knew it was the spot for me. I love being back in my former school district, where I gained my own love for lifelong learning and curiosity thanks to inspiring teachers and staff, and the support of the greater community.
In my spare time, I love to play outside. Whether it's backpacking through a Western mountain range or cross country skiing the local trails in Wisconsin, I try take advantage of any excuse to be in the fresh air! I also have an energetic puppy named Dot who also loves to join me on my outdoor adventures. When I'm not teaching or outside, I'm busy spending time with my amazing community of friends and family, or perhaps gardening, volunteering, or working on house projects. I love taking photos as well, and nearly all of the photos on this site are images from my travels around the U.S. and the world.
My hobbies and interests dovetail perfectly with what we study together in 7th grade: GEOGRAPHY! In our classes we will be learning about the earth and its diversity of people. We will refine our map reading skills, explore the "Five Themes" of geography, and complete area studies for the the major regions of the world.
Students, know that you're always welcome in my classroom during lunch, homeroom, before school, or after school if you need help with anything (but please let me know ahead of time so I can be sure to be there too).
Students and parents alike can email me with any questions or concerns. I'll be updating this site often. I am looking forward to working with all of you this year! Let's make it a great one!
